The problem
Stores pile up hidden problems over time: code left behind by uninstalled apps, risky third-party scripts, broken links, messy metafields and content gaps. Merchants rarely notice until something breaks, and there is no single place that shows all of it.
What I built
Store Health audits eight areas of a store in one read-only pass: theme, scripts, metafields, files, products, links, discounts and AI visibility. Each scan returns a weighted health score and a fix list that points to the exact theme file and line, so a merchant or their developer knows where to look.
Under the hood
- Shopify's own Theme Check engine runs on the server against live theme files, with about 88 rules rewritten in plain language for merchants.
- Scans run on a Postgres-backed job queue with leases and heartbeats: jobs are claimed atomically, expired leases get picked up again, and a worker hands its jobs back on shutdown. One scan per shop at a time, with a global concurrency cap.
- GraphQL calls wait according to Shopify's cost bucket (requested cost, available points and restore rate), and large catalogs go through Bulk Operations instead of paging.
- Leftover app code is grouped by vendor from known domains and patterns, graded by where it lives (theme, ScriptTag or metafields), and confirmed with a liveness probe on the script URL.
- Also: a Web Pixel extension, Sidekick admin tools, Billing API subscriptions and one-time purchases, and PDF reports.
